Sistema.bio, a biogas technology firm headquartered in Nairobi, has successfully secured $15 million in new funding to enhance its global reach in providing sustainable energy solutions. This financial boost will enable the company to broaden its operations, venture into new markets, and further develop its regenerative agricultural offerings, aiming to supply clean energy and sustainable farming solutions to smallholder farmers around the world.

The investment round was spearheaded by ElectriFI, an initiative managed by EDFI Management Company, and saw participation from previous investors such as Chroma Impact Investment, KawiSafi Ventures, and AXA IM Alts. Sistema.bio’s innovative biogas systems, which transform animal waste into renewable energy and organic fertilizer, have already been adopted by over 12,000 farms in 31 countries, demonstrating significant support for smallholder farmers.

With a strategic emphasis on the African continent, Sistema.bio operates in several countries including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Malawi, and Nigeria, positively impacting over 100,000 farmers in the sub-Saharan region. The company has also formed a partnership with Engie Access, an off-grid energy service provider, to introduce its biogas digesters in Zambia and Mozambique, furthering its mission to improve energy access in rural communities and enhance agricultural productivity through renewable energy.

Sistema.bio is dedicated to decarbonizing the agricultural sector by reducing carbon emissions and encouraging eco-friendly farming practices. CEO Alexander Eaton has set ambitious goals for the company, aiming to empower one million farmers by 2025 and contribute to the reduction of 1% of global emissions by 2030. The company’s biodigesters not only facilitate clean energy generation but also support climate change adaptation efforts by lowering CO₂ emissions and providing biofertilizers that improve soil health and crop yields.

This latest funding round, following the company’s Series B in 2022, propels Sistema.bio towards further expansion in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This investment reflects growing confidence in Sistema.bio’s potential to scale its impactful solutions in the fight against climate change. The company aspires to drive progress in sustainable farming and clean energy access for smallholder farmers, playing a crucial role in global efforts to mitigate carbon emissions and bolster climate resilience, particularly in Africa where smallholder farmers are vital to food security and environmental sustainability.
