Kenyan Peter Tabichi takes home $1 million as winner of the Global Teacher Prize 2019

Kenyan Peter Tabichi is a teacher at Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Pwani Village, situated in a remote, semi-arid part of Kenya’s Rift Valley.

This science teacher and Franciscan Brother has emerged the winner of the Global Teacher Prize 2019. This entitles him to the grand prize of $1,000,000.

Peter was chosen from 10 finalists at an event held on Saturday 23rd March in Dubai and the announcement was made by movie star Hugh Jackman.

The Global Teacher Prize is a US $1 million award presented annually to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to their profession.

The Global Teacher Prize serves to underline the importance of educators and the fact that, throughout the world, their efforts deserve to be recognised and celebrated. It seeks to acknowledge the impacts of the very best teachers – not only on their students but on the communities around them.

Peter has dedicated his life to helping others. He gives 80% of his teaching salary to local community projects, including education, sustainable agriculture and peace-building.

He’s changed the lives of his students in many ways, including the introduction of science clubs and the promotion of peace between different ethnic groups and religions. He has also helped to address food insecurity among the wider community in the famine-prone Rift Valley.

The Global Teacher Prize is awarded by the Varkey Foundation under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai.

    Congratulations Peter Tabichi.
