Jumia launches subscription model to increase sales

African e-commerce giant Jumia has announced a new prepaid subscription service in a move aimed at boosting sales.

The service will give users access to up to 20 deliveries a month.

The subscription service, dubbed Jumia Prime, has been modeled after Amazon Prime.

Amazon Prime is a subscription service that gives members access to a variety of Amazon perks. Benefits include access to exclusive Amazon Black Friday deals, early  Cyber Monday deals, and a variety of other Amazon-specific benefits.

Regular Jumia shoppers will pay USD 10 for a three month subscription, and USD 20 for a six month subscription.

Jumia’s new subscription model will not discriminate based on the size of the order. This would be a plus for shoppers who make large items, or are buying bulky products.

Currently, pickup delivery fees for large items could soar north of USD 40, per item.

This service will only cover delivery costs within Kenya, for products bought on Jumia, Jumia Express and Jumia Global.

Shoppers buying products from international vendors will however cater for their shipping costs.

This subscription service is currently available in Nairobi Kenya, and its environs.
