Jumia is suspending its operations in Africa with Rwanda being the latest cut.
The e-commerce giant is suspending its delivery operations in Rwanda, after 6 years in the country.
In a statement issued to its Rwanda-based customers, Jumia said, “We regret to inform you that Jumia will suspend our on-demand delivery operations in Rwanda on January 9th 2020.”
Jumia added that it would not process any more orders past January 9th 2019. All customer accounts will be terminated and Jumia Prime subscribers refunded.
Jumia Rwanda, Managing Director Albert Munyabugingo explained that the firm has struggled to achieve profitability in various markets, hence the suspensions.
Most recently Jumia shut down Jumia Travel in Nigeria, ceding all its business in the region to Travelstart.
Numerous employees lost their jobs. They will however be given job placements in Travelstart, Jumia Food and Jumia Mall.
Jumia recently exited Tanzania and Cameroon markets.
Jumia Kenya is set to lay off more employees in 2020. It has already laid of 6% of its Kenyan workforce so far.
The company has been struggling with profitability for a while. It’s stock nosedived after a report detailing various cases of fraud, and misreporting earnings to its investors.
The e-commerce firm recently launched Jumia Prime in Kenya to target a market of regular buyers with cheap local deliveries.
