Japanese billionaire, Yusaku Maezawa, is looking for eight people to join him for a Moon voyage on SpaceX rocket. Named “dearMoon”, this is the first civilian lunar orbital missions and it is planned to lift off in 2023.
The objective of “dearMoon” project is to have six to eight accomplished artists travel with Maezawa for free around the Moon on a six-day tour. Maezawa expects the experience of space tourism will inspire the accompanying artists in the creation of new art. The art would be exhibited some time after returning to Earth to help promote peace across the world.
On Tuesday this week, he posted a video online inviting people to apply for a spot on the rocket. According to him, “I have bought all the seats. I will pay for the entire journey.”
Mr Maezawa however stipulated two criteria that would be key in selecting the eight crew members :
Firstly, whatever activity you are into, by going to space, I hope that you can push its envelope, to help other people and greater society in some way.
Secondly, you have to be willing and able to support other crew members who share similar experiences
In 2018, Elon Musk’s SpaceX named Mr Maezawa as the first private passenger due to be flown around the moon.
Mr Maezawa is the founder of Japan’s largest online fashion retailer and is worth about $2 billion.
