Google is known for naming its Android version numbers after desserts. Some of the names we have had are Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jellybean…
Now it has named its latest version of its Android 4.4, mobile operating system “KitKat” after the branded chocolate bar. This was revealed by Google’s Vice President of Android, Chrome, and Google Apps, +Sundar Pichai via a post to Google+.
The Kit Kat name was unexpected since tech pundits have speculated for months that the next operating system would be called Key Lime Pie. Marc Vanlerberghe, director of Android Marketing, said the name was chosen because Kit Kat bars have been a “favorite go-to snack among the team since the early days of Android.”
The Android 4.4 Kit Kat system is expected to launch in October. The software is now running on more than 750 million smartphones and tablets throughout the world, making it the world’s most widely used mobile operating system.
Sundar also mentioned in the post that Android has now passed 1 billion device activations. He thanked the entire Android community (from the hardware manufacturers, chip makers and carriers to the developers and content creators) for making this possible.
