Samsung has just launched its first foldable phone called the Galaxy Fold. The phone was unveiled at the Samsung Unpacked event taking place in San Francisco, California.
The foldable phone has a 4.6 inch display when folded as a handset which unfolds into a 7.3 inch tablet. The device has a customized hinge at its centre, capable of opening and closing hundreds of thousands of times. There are two batteries inside, one on either side of the phone, making for 4,380mAh, combined. You also get an impressive 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage in there.
“Today, Samsung is writing the next chapter in mobile innovation history by changing what’s possible in a smartphone. Galaxy Fold introduces a completely new category that unlocks new capabilities never seen before with our Infinity Flex Display.” said DJ Koh, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics. “We created Galaxy Fold for those that want to experience what a premium foldable device can do, beyond the limitations of a traditional smartphone.”

One of the unique features of the device is that it allows users to have three separate app windows open at once, when the device is in tablet mode.
And there are six cameras on this device – three on the back, two on the inside and one on the front. The camera specs are as follows:
- Cover Camera – 10MP Selfie Camera
- Rear Triple Camera – 16MP Ultra Wide Camera, 12MP Wide-angle Camera, Dual Pixel AF, and 12MP Telephoto Camera
- Front dual camera – 10MP Selfie Camera, 8MP RGB Depth Camera.
The Galaxy Fold will sell for $1,980 and will be available as from April 26 2019.
However impressive the Galaxy Fold may look, it is not the first manufacturer to introduce a foldable phone. California-based Royole beat Samsung to this by introducing a foldable phone named FlexPai in December 2018. Priced from 8,999 to 12,999 yuan ($1,295.49 to $1,871.33), the company started delivering the phones in December 2018.
