Yesterday, Iraq’s Ministry of Communications took the decision to block the Telegram messaging app due to concerns related to national security and the need to protect users’ data. The ministry expressed that the app had mishandled data, leading to this step.
In a statement, the ministry said that it asked Telegram to close down “platforms that leak the data of the official state institutions and the personal data of citizens. As a result, users who want to continue using the Telegram app in Iraq will now require a VPN.
Telegram is a popular app in Iraq for messaging, news, and content sharing. Notably, some channels on the app contain significant amounts of personal data, including names, addresses, and family connections of Iraqis, as reported by Reuters.
The Ministry has claimed that Telegram faced several data breaches that jeopardised national security. However, these allegations seem contradictory to Telegram’s own privacy policy, which highlights its end-to-end encryption. As of now, Telegram ensures encryption for private messages and public channels, as stated in its privacy policy.
Much like other messaging apps, Telegram collects and retains user data, including personal details such as names, phone numbers, and location data. The government is concerned that this information might be misused or accessed without authorisation, putting citizens’ privacy and security at risk.
Beyond the violation of personal data, the decision to block Telegram was influenced by national security worries. The government is worried that the app’s encryption features could hinder authorities from monitoring and tracking potential threats effectively. This lack of oversight might be exploited by malicious individuals or groups, posing a security risk to the country.
Reuters’ emailed request for comment went unanswered by Telegram. However, GizChina confirmed that Telegram did respond to them. According to GizChina, Telegram assured that all user data on its app is highly secure and does not pose any risk to users. The company asserted that the information within its app is well-protected, and only the involved parties have access to it.
“Please remain calm, all user data are very safe and we will do all we can to return our services. We are in talks with the government”.
Telegram in talks with the government of Iraq
Telegram has announced its intention to engage in discussions with the Iraqi government to explore possibilities for restoring its services. The company urged its app users to remain composed and assured them that ongoing dialogues with the government will persist.
The recent suspension of Telegram in Iraq has triggered varying responses. While certain users have shown dissatisfaction and irritation, there are those who view this action as vital in the fight against terrorism and for safeguarding the nation’s security.
