A relatively small indian-based company, Ringing Bells, is launching the cheapest smartphone in the world today. It is the Freedom 251 and it is priced at just Rs 251 (under $4).
The 4″ display smartphone sports a 1.3 GHz Quadcore processor with a 3.2MP AF Rear Camera & .3MP Front camera with its inbuilt touchless technology, ideal for perfect Selfie. It also comes with a 1GB RAM and 8GB internal memory which can be expanded by another 32GB using a microSD card.
With its 1450 mAh battery, Freedom 251 gives you more time to talk, text, play and watch videos without needing to worry about running out of power.
The Freedom 251 runs on Android Lollipop 5.1 and comes pre-installed with several apps which will be useful for farmers, fishermen, women apart from the regular Facebook, YouTube, Google Play and WhatsApp.
According to Ringing Bells, the phone has been developed with the support of the government’s Make in India campaign that encourages local manufacturing. Hence it would be appropriately launched today by India’s Defence Minister Manohar Parrikkar. It adds that the launch is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for “empowering India to the last person, transforming India’s growth story.”
However, with the Indian government’s support, we hope that the price will remain the same.
Bookings for the smartphone opens on Feb. 18 at 6 a.m. and close on Feb. 21 at 8 p.m., with the deliveries being completed by June 30.
