Following its successful launch in Zambia, Kenya and Ghana, Facebook-championed Internet.org app is set for launch in Nigeria next month.
In a chat with Innovation Village on the sidelines of the Mobile West Africa conference in Lagos Nigeria, Ebele Okobi, Facebook’s Head of Public Policy (Africa) the app could be launched on more than one network in Nigeria.
If this happens, she said Nigeria will be one of the few countries where the app is available on several networks.
Operators bear the cost of internet access and although they are introducing internet to a lot of people, they can introduce pricing following the expiration of the agreement,” she said.
“We are asking them to give up short term profit for long-term benefits,” she said.
When the Internet.org app becomes available in Nigeria, she said subscribers of the partnering networks will be able to access a set of websites and services for free.
For the Nigerian version, Internet.org is also seeking recommendations for locally relevant services.
