Global satellite communications provider Intelsat has entered into a transformative partnership with the Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative (WPDI), a nonprofit founded by actor, UNESCO Special Envoy, and humanitarian Forest Whitaker. The collaboration aims to deliver high-speed satellite internet to underserved educational centers in conflict-affected regions of East Africa, specifically in South Sudan and Uganda.
Bridging the Digital Divide in Fragile Regions
Under a three-year agreement, Intelsat will equip ten WPDI Community Learning Centers—seven in South Sudan and three in Uganda—with advanced satellite connectivity solutions. These include full installation of satellite terminals, managed internet services, and ongoing technical support. The goal is to provide reliable, high-speed internet access in areas where traditional infrastructure is either severely limited or entirely absent.
This initiative is designed to empower thousands of young people with access to digital education, online resources, and global learning opportunities—tools that are often taken for granted in more connected parts of the world.
Forest Whitaker, WPDI’s founder and CEO, commented:
Education is essential to building peace. Our work leverages technology to offer opportunities to youth affected by conflict. With tools like connectivity, young people can reshape their futures and help bring peace to their communities.
A Timely Intervention
The partnership comes at a critical time. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), only 19% of people in the world’s least developed countries have internet access. In regions experiencing active conflict, that number is even lower, making digital education nearly impossible for millions of youth.
By bringing satellite-powered internet to WPDI’s centers, the initiative will enable first-time access to online learning platforms, virtual classrooms, and digital skill-building programs. These resources are expected to significantly enhance WPDI’s existing curriculum, which already includes conflict resolution, entrepreneurship, and leadership development.
Empowering the Next Generation of Peacebuilders
WPDI’s model focuses on training young people to become agents of peace and development within their communities. Many of its alumni have gone on to become educators, civic leaders, and entrepreneurs. One such example is Benson Lugwar, a former child soldier from Uganda who has transformed his life through WPDI’s programs and now serves as both an elected official and a radio broadcaster.
Dave Wajsgras, CEO of Intelsat, stated:
Connectivity has the power to fuel education and long-term development. WPDI’s mission aligns perfectly with our belief in satellite technology as a bridge to opportunity. We are proud to contribute to creating equitable digital access in these vulnerable communities.
Looking Ahead
This partnership between Intelsat and WPDI is more than a technology deployment—it’s a lifeline for communities striving to rebuild after conflict. By enabling digital access, the initiative opens doors to education, economic opportunity, and social transformation.
As the world becomes increasingly digital, ensuring that no one is left behind—especially in regions most affected by violence and instability—is not just a moral imperative, but a strategic investment in global peace and development.
