Instagram will soon enable NFTs, according to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta. According to TechCrunch report, Zuckerberg announced the news at the SXSW (South by Southwest) conference earlier this week.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirms that NFTs will be supported on Instagram
“In the near future, we’ll be adding NFTs to Instagram,” says the company. “I’m not ready to say precisely what that is today,” Zuckerberg told Shark Tank’s Daymond John, “but over the next several months, the ability to bring some of your NFTs in, and maybe over time, be able to mint things within that ecosystem.”
This is not the first time we have seen NFTs mentioned on Instagram. App reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi observed Instagram working on “Collectibles” last year, as we mentioned in our latest roundup of planned Instagram features. Instagram’s CEO, Adam Mosseri, acknowledged shortly after that the company is looking into NFTs.
Instagram is intending to build a marketplace where you can sell your NFTs, rather than just being a platform to show off your NFTs. You’ll be able to share your Collectibles by connecting your digital wallets. According to one of Paluzzi’s pictures, Instagram’s Collectibles would be limited to the Ethereum, Polygon, and Flow blockchains at first.
While Instagram is currently working on its NFT integration, Twitter has lately begun allowing users to create hexagonal NFT profile images in its iOS app. We’ll have to wait and see if the Meta-owned social networking platform will ever allow you to use your NFTs as profile images.
