Instagram is expanding its one-way messaging feature known as “Channels” globally. This move comes shortly after Meta introduced the feature to its messaging app, WhatsApp. With Channels, Instagram aims to provide a new way for creators to engage with their followers and deepen their connections.
Previously available to a limited number of users in select countries like India and Brazil, Instagram’s Broadcast Channels will now be accessible to a global audience. By subscribing to a channel, users can receive updates and messages from their favorite creators. Similar to Telegram Channels, followers won’t have the ability to post, but they can react to content with emojis and participate in polls.
Meta expressed its commitment to empowering creators and facilitating direct engagement on a large scale. The company stated, “Today we’re expanding Instagram broadcast channels globally, giving millions of creators a new way to directly engage with their followers at scale.” Additionally, Meta highlighted specific channels already live in India, encouraging users to join and explore the new feature.
To join a Broadcast Channel on Instagram, users can click on the broadcast link provided via a sticker or visit the creator’s Instagram profile and tap on the pinned link. In case a creator starts a broadcast channel, a one-time notification will be sent. By tapping the link, users can easily join the channel and start receiving notifications for updates.
While anyone can discover and view the content in a broadcast channel, only followers who have joined the channel will receive update notifications. Meta is also actively working on additional features to enhance the Instagram experience for creators. These upcoming features include question prompts and a dedicated channels tab, making it easier for users to access joined channels and discover new ones.
Meta is exploring various controls to assist creators in managing and promoting their broadcast channels. These features may include setting an expiration date and time for channels, appointing moderators to assist with member management and content, and sharing links or previews to Stories to encourage followers to join.
While Instagram has received criticism in the past for emulating features from competing platforms such as TikTok, BeReal, and now Telegram, the introduction of Channels will likely demonstrate the platform’s commitment to offering creators a distinctive environment to engage with their audience and cultivate genuine interactions.
As the global rollout of Instagram’s Broadcast Channels progresses, users can expect a more engaging experience on the platform, strengthening the bond between creators and their followers.
