Instagram announced that it is launching auto-generated captions in IG Feed videos. The Meta-owned company made this announcement via its Instagram page.
“We’re excited to share auto-generated captions for IG Feed videos. Adding captions makes Instagram more accessible for those in the deaf/hard-of-hearing communities🧏🦻. You will have the option to turn captions on (or off). Available in 17 languages (with more to come).”
This news comes a day after it announced it will no longer support the separate IGTV app and focus on keeping all videos in the main Instagram app.
According to Instagram spokeswoman Christine Pai in an email to CNET, “We’ve noticed that our community has implemented time-consuming and labor-intensive ‘workarounds’ (burning-in captions on videos, outsourcing captioning work) in an effort to make their content more accessible for deaf and hard of hearing viewers. Auto-generated captions on IG video will help people save time by spending less time captioning and more time creating amazing content.”
Instagram says auto-generated captions for videos in the feed should be showing up for users starting today.
