Meta has been reported to be working on adding a new feature called “Social Channels” to Instagram. Adwaith Varma, a Software Engineer who shares potential updates on various social apps, spotted this development and shared screenshots on Twitter. The screenshots confirm that Meta is actively working on a feature that will enable users to create social channels, where followers can join and send messages within these channels.
On Instagram, creators can create social channels, which are group chats with their followers. They can set up multiple social channels within 30 days. However, it’s essential to remember that each social channel can have a maximum of 250 participants, including the creator.
We reached out to Instagram for further clarification on this new feature, but unfortunately, we have yet to receive a response. However, the information provided in the platform’s Help Centre sheds light on the functionality. It states that these channels are discoverable by anyone on Instagram, allowing users to easily find and join them, subsequently initiating message exchanges.
One noteworthy aspect is that users can join a social channel without requiring an admin’s approval, although some admins may implement an approval system. Similar to Broadcast Channels, Creators can initiate social channels through their stories, invite links, or directly on their profiles, providing various entry points for interested individuals.
Joining a social channel is made easy on Instagram. Simply tap the channel’s sticker in a story or use the invite link provided. Once you’ve accessed the channel, tap “Join social channel” located at the bottom. In case the channel creator requires approval, you’ll begin receiving channel notifications once you’re accepted.
Once you’ve become a member of a social channel, you gain the ability to send messages to other participants. These messages can be viewed in your inbox, and if you want to expand the channel’s reach, you can invite others by sharing an invite link.
Should you ever wish to leave a channel, you have the freedom to do so at any time. Instagram has made this feature available on both Android and iPhone devices exclusively within the Instagram app.
