Instagram is introducing a new anti-abuse option on the platform. This time it’s focused on limiting the actions of some kind of followers rather than disabling or restricting individual accounts.
As you can see in the above screenshot, there is a new ‘Limits’ option in the Privacy settings, allowing you to temporarily restrict unwanted comments and messages from selected groups of followers.
Matt Navarra (@mattnavarra) who shared this news says Instagram will recommend groups of accounts (new followers or accounts that do not follow you) that you may want to limit. This, however, will be based on detected activity by the algorithm. You can then hide any interaction from users in these groups, unless you choose otherwise.
Quickly, here’s How to set up Limits on your Instagram profile:
Step 1: Go to “Settings”, next “Privacy” to view the option – Limits.
Step 2: Tap “Continue” and this will take you to the set up page.
Instagram gives you options to select “Who to Limit”. Once you’ve made your decision you can choose “How Long to Limit”. For now, the duration is from 24 hours to 1 month (4 weeks).
Step 3: After setting up click “Turn On”.
Abuse on Instagram, especially towards celebrities, is becoming more and more common. On Wednesday, 21st April 2021, the Social Network announced it was rolling out a tool that will let users automatically filter out direct message requests which contain abusive words, phrases, and emojis. The purpose was to kick against ‘Hate Speech’ on the platform.
It is very easy to launch an attack or mislead criticism which can later result in an Internet embarrassment. Limiting accounts who do not follow you or new followers can help to greatly reduce the negative impact of certain people.
