Instagram is set to enhance its messaging system with a significant update that introduces a variety of new features aimed at improving user experience and strengthening its position against competitors in the direct messaging space, such as Apple iMessage and various third-party applications.
One of the standout features of this update is the music-sharing capability. Users will now be able to share their favorite songs directly within one-on-one messages and group chats. To access this feature, simply open the sticker tray and select the “Music” option. This action will bring up a search bar that allows users to explore Instagram’s extensive audio library. However, there are a couple of important limitations to note: the song must be available on Instagram, and users can only share clips that are a maximum of 30 seconds long.
In addition to music-sharing, Instagram is introducing a translation tool that supports 99 different languages. This feature is designed to be user-friendly; by simply holding down a message and selecting the “Translate” option, users will see the translated text appear directly beneath the original message. This functionality aims to facilitate smoother communication across diverse language speakers.
Another practical addition is the ability to pin messages, images, or even Reels at the top of chat conversations. Users can pin up to three messages per chat by holding down the desired message and tapping “Pin.” This feature is particularly useful for keeping frequently requested information easily accessible, although it’s likely to be popular for sharing memes and other fun content.
Furthermore, Instagram is rolling out a scheduling feature that allows users to plan messages in advance. By long-pressing the send button, users can schedule messages to be sent up to 29 days later. This could be particularly beneficial for users who want to send reminders or plan content sharing ahead of time.
Lastly, the update introduces a new method for inviting participants to group chats via QR codes, making it easier to connect with friends and family in a digital space. These new tools are being rolled out today for both iOS and Android users worldwide, with a web version in development that will be available in the future.
In addition to these messaging enhancements, Instagram has been actively working on other features to enrich its platform. Recently, the company began testing a dislike button for comments, which could provide users with more nuanced feedback options. Additionally, Instagram has announced plans for a video-editing app similar to CapCut, and it has extended the length of Reels to three minutes to better compete with TikTok. Notably, the platform has also made the decision to eliminate third-party fact-checkers, signaling a shift in its approach to content moderation.
