The new “Sensitive Content Control” is Instagram’s update that gives users the ability to see what they want, and not see what they don’t want.
The company, who made this announcement on Tuesday, July 20th, said, “We recognize that everybody has different preferences for what they want to see in Explore, and this control will give people more choice over what they see.”
According to Instagram, the new feature will appear in the Settings Menu and users can choose whether or not to allow more content that could be “upsetting or offensive,” limit that content or “limit even more.”
“You can think of sensitive content as posts that don’t necessarily break our rules, but could potentially be upsetting to some people — such as posts that may be sexually suggestive or violent,” it added.
To make this clearer, the support page for Sensitive Content Control, confirms sensitive content could mean sexually suggestive or violent posts, as well as those that promote things like tobacco or pharmaceutical use. Instagram also made it clear that this setting is based on its Recommendation Guidelines, which it’s using to govern what can show up on the Explore page, and not its Community Guidelines.
Posts that seriously violate Facebook’s policies will continue to be removed. Managing sensitive content only gives users more options depending on the degree of exposure to distracting content in the Explore tab. For example, Facebook states that content depicting fights or people in “see-through” clothes may be considered “sensitive” and should not appear on Explore pages for people with restrictions on sensitive content. However, “graphic” violence or nudity will be removed from the site and will not be visible to anyone in control of the sensitive “permitted” content.
To view your Sensitive Content Control, Instagram says;
- Go to your profile, tap the Settings menu in the upper right corner,
- Tap Account, then tap Sensitive Content Control. Here, you can decide whether to keep the setting at its default state, Limit, or to see more, Allow, or less of some types of sensitive content, Limit Even More.
You can change your selection at any time. One exception to this: the Allow option will not be available to people under 18.
