inDrive, an American e-taxi platform, has successfully obtained a license to operate in Kenya after nearly four years since its initial launch in 2019. This marks a significant milestone for the company, as it meets the rigorous regulatory standards set by local authorities.
As of November 2022, only five taxi app operators had fulfilled the new regulatory standards and received licenses from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). These operators included Uber, Bolt, Little Rides, Yego, and Farasi Cabs. By satisfying the local regulatory requirements, inDrive joins this select group of licensed ride-hailing services, reflecting its commitment to complying with local regulations and ensuring safe transportation for its customers.
One of inDrive’s competitive advantages lies in its unique pricing model. Unlike traditional ride-hailing platforms, inDrive allows passengers to propose the fare they deem fair for their ride. This gives customers the power to determine the pricing, creating a sense of transparency and choice.
Concurrently, drivers are provided with the freedom to accept the proposed price, counteroffer with a different fare, or decline the offer without facing any penalties or fees. This pricing approach not only benefits both passengers and drivers but also sets inDrive apart from its competitors.
Originating from California, inDrive has garnered worldwide popularity, boasting over 175 million downloads and earning recognition as the second most downloaded mobility app globally. In 2019, the company began operating in Nairobi under the name inDriver Taxis but rebranded to inDrive in October of the previous year. This strategic rebranding aligns the company’s identity with its international presence and emphasises its commitment to change the transportation ecosystem.
Godfrey Mabula, inDrive’s Business Representative in Kenya, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the official licensing to operate in the country. He highlighted inDrive’s dedication to providing safe, reliable, and affordable mobility options to the people of Kenya. The company is eager to collaborate with local drivers and actively serve the community while upholding its commitment to safety and fair pricing practices.
