In a significant stride toward restoring Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, announced that IHS Towers, a leading telecommunications infrastructure company, has committed to renovating the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Innovation Park in Kano. This facility, which had been looted and vandalized during the August 1, 2024 ‘Endbadgovernance’ protest, holds a key role in advancing Nigeria’s position in the global digital economy.
A Symbol of Kano’s Aspirations
The NCC Innovation Park is not just a physical structure—it represents the ambitions of Kano and Nigeria to lead in the rapidly evolving global digital landscape. Highlighting its importance, Minister Tijani emphasized that the Park will serve as a crucial resource for over 300 youths in Kano who are currently part of the government’s 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative. This program, designed to equip three million Nigerians with essential digital and technical skills, aims to position Nigeria as a frontrunner in the global tech industry, rather than a mere participant.
IHS Towers Steps In
Dr. Tijani, through a post on X (formerly Twitter), shared the good news of IHS Towers’ commitment to fully restoring the Innovation Park. This development follows a promise the Minister made in August to expedite the Park’s restoration, ensuring that it can serve the 3MTT fellows and others who rely on it for hands-on, applied learning.
“I am pleased to announce that we have received the support of IHS Towers, which has committed to the full renovation of the location. This will allow us to finally put it to good use,” the Minister stated. He also reassured the youth, particularly the 3MTT fellows in Kano, that their aspirations for contributing to the global digital workforce are valid and achievable.
The Attack on the Park
The Innovation Park had been a target during the August 2024 protest when several youths broke into the facility, damaging the building and making off with valuable equipment, including personal computers and furniture. The Park, built during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, had yet to be officially commissioned, though it was only weeks away from its launch.
In the aftermath, Dr. Tijani revealed that about 150 desktop PCs and laptops were stolen, dealing a substantial blow to the facility’s readiness. While the infrastructure had been nearly complete, the remaining delay in its operational status was due to ongoing work on its power generator.
Rebuilding for the Future
The renovation of the Innovation Park marks more than just the restoration of a building. It represents a renewed commitment to empowering Nigeria’s youth through technology, providing them with the tools and training necessary to compete in the global digital economy. As the country continues to make strides in digital transformation, the Park’s restoration will play a pivotal role in achieving the ambitious goals of initiatives like the 3MTT program.
