As if the world needed more reason why Idris Elba should be the next James Bond, the 42 year old went ahead to break an 88 year old record.
The record in question is the ‘Flying Mile’ – the fastest speed one can reach over the course of a measured mile. Sir Malcolm Campbell set the record in 1927 in his specially constructed Bluebird car with a speed of 174.8mph.
Idris Elba broke the speed record over a measured mile across the Pendine stands in Wales – the exact place where Sir Malcolm set the record – in a £175,000 Bentley Continental GT with a speed of 180.361mph.
The record was independently verified by the UK Timing Association.
This recent record is part of a new TV show action hero was filming for Discovery UK called No Limits.
He said: ‘I’m absolutely elated to have broken the “Flying Mile” at Pendine Sands.
‘It’s an honour to have taken on the challenge, and to successfully follow in the footsteps of the illustrious Sir Malcolm Campbell.’
The series, which will screened in July, will see him take on a series of tough challenges, mostly high-octane activities such as speed boating, as well as discovering the science and history behind each sport.
‘I’m taking on the toughest racing challenges of my life,’ the actor said of the show.
‘Along the way I’ll meet extraordinary individuals, spectacular machines and hear amazing stories of how far people go to satisfy their love of speed.
