Hyundai has unveiled the first locally assembled electric car, the Hyundai Kona, in Nigeria. The car is assembled by by Stallion Group Automobile at Ojo in Lagos.

The unveiling was done by the Lagos state governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He said that with the unveiling of the car, Nigerians can now drive electric cars, noting that Lagos remains the hub for the nation’s economy & a pacesetter in industrialisation.

He also added that “the future that we see is the future of technology and this is the technology that we are talking about. This is 21st Century technology that has been brought into our country. With hardcore manufacturing companies like Stallion Group Automobile, we can begin to see the need to dis-emphasise mono-product, which is oil.”

“With the innovation of Hyundai Kona, we do not need to put the pressure on what the pump price of oil is again, what the pump price of petroleum is.”

The car can drive 482 km (equivalent of Lagos to Asaba) at one charge which takes 9 hrs 45m for a full charge (0 -100%). It can go from 0-100km in 9.7 secs. It is priced at N24 million.

The Hyundai Kona car, manufactured by Stallion Group is 100 percent electric and comes with zero emission, 482km driving range, and can be charged both at home and workplace

According to the Head, Sales and Marketing, Hyundai Motors, Gaurav Vashisht, “the ease of charging is unmatched, one can even plug it in at home or at work and charge it for 9.35 hrs for a full battery capacity. Hyundai Kona comes with a five years of battery warranty and five years of vehicle warranty. KONA Electric will change the way people think about going electric. It would make history as first EV to in Nigeria with local manufacturing”.

Globally Hyundai introduced the Hyundai Kona in 2017 as a five-door subcompact crossover SUV. It launched the Kona electric, the electric version, in South Korea on the first half of 2018 and rolled out gradually worldwide afterwards. Cumulative sales of KONA Electric reached 103,719 units as of June 30—just over two years since its launch in March 2018
