Huawei has declared a significant expansion of its digital skills training initiative in Sub-Saharan Africa, with the goal of providing ICT (Information and Communication Technology) training to an additional 150,000 individuals within the next three years.
This expansion is a continuation of Huawei’s previous efforts, which have already yielded impressive results. The company had initially set a target to train 100,000 people by 2025 but has exceeded this objective by 20%, completing the task ten months ahead of the planned schedule.
The expansion announcement was made at the LEAP Summit 2024: ICT Talent and Sustainable Development for Sub-Saharan Africa, which took place in Shanghai, China, on June 28th. The summit, a collaborative effort between Huawei and the African Telecommunications Union (ATU), was part of the official partner program for the Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2024.
The summit convened over 200 attendees, including senior government officials from various countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, to discuss the importance of digital skill acquisition for the region’s workforce.
According to the World Economic Forum, by 2030, there will be a global need to upskill or reskill over a billion people. In line with this, the International Financial Corporation projects that Sub-Saharan Africa alone will require digital skills for more than 230 million jobs by 2030.
During the summit, Jeff Wang, Huawei’s Senior Vice President and President of Public Affairs and Communications, spoke about the company’s dedication to fostering a comprehensive, systematic, and forward-looking approach to talent development. He shared his contentment with the progress of the LEAP Digital Talent Development Program since its inception in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2022, noting the significant and positive impact it has had on the lives of many individuals in the region.
