Huawei Egypt and Vodafone Egypt unveil groundbreaking 25 Gbps E-band microwave transmission link as a global first

Huawei Egypt and Vodafone Egypt have recently announced the successful deployment of a groundbreaking 25 Gbps microwave transmission link, which is the first of its kind to be commercially utilized on a global scale. This advanced microwave link operates within the E-band spectrum, specifically at the 80 GHz frequency, and is designed to deliver high-capacity, high-performance data transmission capabilities. The link boasts an impressive capability of transmitting data at a rate of 25 Gbps, which can cover considerable distances.

This technological advancement was introduced shortly after the Egyptian government formalized agreements with three mobile operators, including Vodafone Egypt, for the second phase of the 5G network licenses. These agreements are aimed at bolstering the provision of 5G services, enhancing the quality of communications, and expanding the overall network capacity within the country.

In addition to these developments, May 2024 marked a significant milestone for Huawei Cloud as it launched its inaugural public cloud service in Egypt, in collaboration with Telecom Egypt. This launch signifies the establishment of Huawei’s first public cloud platform based in Egypt. The platform will be housed within Telecom Egypt’s data centers and will benefit from a robust global connectivity infrastructure, connecting to over 60 countries through 14 submarine cable systems—a figure that is projected to increase to 18 by the year 2025.

The introduction of the public cloud platform is part of a broader initiative to position Egypt as a key regional center for the advancement of cloud computing and digital services. Similarly, the deployment of the 25 Gbps microwave link is anticipated to further solidify Egypt’s status as a central hub for ultra-fast connectivity, offering significant advantages to both the commercial sector and individual consumers.

Jim Liu, the Chief Executive Officer of Huawei Egypt, emphasized the importance of the strategic partnership with Vodafone Egypt, noting that the new 25 Gbps microwave link is a critical enabler for the delivery of high-demand applications, including 5G, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Huawei remains dedicated to the continuous development of cutting-edge network solutions and to making significant contributions to the field of telecommunications technology throughout the Middle East and Africa.

Furthermore, following a 10-year partnership agreement with Microsoft in January 2024, the Vodafone Group has extended its existing collaboration with Google for an additional decade. This extended partnership is set to introduce an array of new services, devices, and television experiences to Vodafone’s customer base in both Europe and Africa.

Leveraging the capabilities of Google Cloud and Google’s Gemini models, this collaboration will provide enhanced storage solutions, bolstered security, and advanced AI assistance to Vodafone’s customers and business partners. Vodafone’s alliance with Microsoft is focused on delivering generative AI, digital services, and cloud solutions to a vast audience, reaching over 300 million businesses and consumers across Africa and Europe.
