Google recently released its exciting Android Pie update with tons of new features. If you’re wondering “will my Huawei phone get Android 9 Pie?” we’re here to help. We’ll provide information about what to expect, what’s new, betas, and when the update might arrive. Including Honor Android 9 updates.
Earlier this year Google pushed out an Android P Developer Preview to Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL users, along several other smartphone manufacturers like OnePlus and Sony. Sadly, Huawei didn’t participate in the early beta testing phase.
In fact, the company is slowly finishing a few more Android 8.0 Oreo updates. An update that came out nearly a year ago. So, we’re not expecting Android 9 updates too fast even if Huawei recently shared some update plans. Essentially, we do have good news, so here’s what owners need to know.
Will My Huawei Phone Get Android Pie?
While we’ve heard from several manufacturers like OnePlus, LG, and Motorola regarding Android 9 Pie updates, Huawei isn’t saying much. Until they make a more official announcement, we don’t know what devices will get the update, or when. However, we do know what devices are already being tested with Android Pie, or will later this year. So that’s where we’ll start.
These are the Huawei phones we believe will get Android 9 updates in 2018-19.
- Huawei Mate 10, Mate 10 Porsche Design
- Mate RS
- Huawei P20, P20 Pro
And while this list is relatively small, it’s only the beginning. Again, these are under internal testing already, so beta programs will likely begin soon. Plus, we anticipate more devices will get the update and get added to this list later in the year.
Next, look for Android 9 Pie updates for the Honor 10, Honor V10 and the Honor Play first, with other devices sometime in 2019.
Huawei Android Pie Update Release Date
As we’ve seen in prior years, Huawei is pretty quick to software updates. However, an actual release date is still a complete mystery, just like which devices will actually get updated in the near future. We know a bunch of phones will get a slice of Pie before the end of the year, but most updates will arrive in 2019.
This fall Huawei will release a powerful new phone to take on the iPhone 11 and Note 9, one that will likely come with Android Pie out of the box. Once it arrives, we expect the company to quickly start releasing beta software for the devices listed above.
Basically, high-end devices like the P20 Pro or Mate 10 Pro are first on the list to software upgrades. Then, they’ll slowly work down internal lists to other popular phones like the Honor 8. GSMArena claims the regular Huawei P20 will get Android Pie first, starting in September.
Google recently added something known as Project Treble to Android, which should help manufacturers like Huawei release updates faster than prior years. So while we’re expecting fast updates, don’t be surprised if some arrive in late 2018 or early 2019. You never know with big Android updates.
Huawei Android 9 Pie Beta
Right now we have no information regarding a potential Android P or Android 9 Pie beta for Huawei smartphones. Well, aside from the fact that they’re internally testing the devices we mentioned earlier. That being said, we believe both Huawei and Honor will release beta versions for its most popular devices.
Essentially, your P20 Pro or Mate 10 could get a chance to try Android 9 ahead of everyone else thanks to a beta program. We could see this arrive in the next month or two, but don’t act surprised if they skip a beta completely and go right to upgrades.
What’s New in Android 9 Pie
Android 9 Pie is Google’s best, fastest, smartest version of Android yet. Whether that’s tools to make life easier like auto-fill, or AI to preserve battery life. New features that you can use to do more with your phone. Users will enjoy bundled and smarter notifications, auto-fill improvements, and tons of “smart” features and controls. Not to mention new gesture navigation, digital wellbeing options, Google Assistant improvements, themes, dark modes, and support for the notch on a bunch of Huawei phones. That’s on top of the usual performance and battery life changes.
If you’re wondering what’s new or what to expect we have a detailed comparison and breakdown of everything that’s new.
As you know, Huawei puts a skin over stock Android, like Samsung. And while that skin adds extra features or controls, it also slows down the update process. That’s because they have to blend both versions into one. Project Treble will help alleviate that slow process, but not until next year. So, expect a lot of these features and a few new ones once Huawei gets around to it. That’s on top of the usual software and performance improvements, bug fixes, and new or exciting features from Huawei.
Final Thoughts & What’s Next
In closing, we want to remind Huawei owners that this will likely be a slow process. Google pushes the software out, then manufacturers have to get it ready for multiple devices. Right now almost every high-end Huawei or Honor phone from the last 2 years is on Oreo, but they only just finished rolling out updates. Meaning that while some of you will get Android 9 Pie in 2018, others will be waiting until 2019.
And while that’s both good and bad news, we want to set expectations for owners. We’re hoping Huawei shares more information or opens beta programs for more people in the United States. As they do, we’ll let you know all the details right here.
Considering Google just released Android 9 Pie in August, we’re still at least 2-3 months away from major upgrades. Well, aside from potential beta programs. Just know that Android 8.0 or 8.1 Oreo is still excellent software, and Pie will be available soon enough.
