Twitter has just launched a new video service where you can capture, edit and share videos right from your Twitter app.
Twitter designed the camera to be simple to use so as to capture and share life’s most interesting moments as they happen. In just a few taps you can add a video to unfolding conversations, share your perspective of a live event, and show your everyday moments instantly, without ever having to leave the app. Viewing and playing videos is just as simple: videos are previewed with a thumbnail and you can play them with just one tap.
With this new video service, videos taken or uploaded have a 30-second time limit unlike Vine’s 6-second limit. It also allows users to capture video in segments, and edit or rearrange them in the same way as Vine videos.
This suggests this new video feature could adversely affect Vine even though the company says it is dedicated to both products.
Jinen Kamdar, product director at Twitter, says Twitter video doesn’t threaten Vine, and that the two products have different use cases. Vine is for “short form entertainment,” he said. Twitter video? “Some of the Twitter use cases like breaking news will become a lot stronger and richer,” he added.
According to Kamdar, the new feature will roll out slowly to iOS and Android users beginning Tuesday, and will be available to all users in the coming weeks.
My Verdict: This will be the death of Vine as we know except there is a significant change in Vine’s offering.
Why have two video services?
Well, time will tell…
