Last year March, Google introduced Google Career Certificates to help people learn the skills they need to qualify for roles in those fields; in that way, helping drive economic opportunity and mobility. The initiative saw more than 70,000 people earn a certificate, with 75% of graduates reporting positive career impacts within six months of graduating.
As a way to expand its objectives, the Tech giant, in partnership with job seekers, has launched “Interview Warmup” that allows the beneficiaries to practise answering questions selected by industry experts. According to Google, the new tool will use machine learning to transcribe the answers and help users discover ways to improve. “Interview Warmup is a quick way to prepare for your next interview. Practice key questions, get insights about your answers, and get more comfortable interviewing.”
The GIF above kind of explains the process which you can try out here. As you tap “Start Practice” the tool takes you to a new page where you get to answer questions from industry experts in the field in which you’re seeking a job. Make sure you have your MIC on as you will speak to an automated interviewer.
Just talk and your answers are transcribed in real-time. As Google explained in the announcement, you immediately “get insights about your answers. No grades, just insights about what you said. See job-related terms you used, your most-used words, and talking points you covered.” Your responses aren’t graded or judged and you can answer questions as many times as you want. It’s your own private space to practice, prepare and get comfortable.
Here’s how to use the Google Interview Warmup
- Go down to the very bottom of the screen and click on “Start practicing.”
- Select your Field of work from the drop-down menu, then click Start on the following page. As a result, the tool will prompt you to type or voice the answers to five questions. Click Answer to use your laptop’s mic or Keyboard to type your response.
- Click the blue Check button in the lower-left corner once you have provided your response. The tool checks your response and gives you feedback based on three different categories.
- Click on Job-related terms, followed by the highlighted words in your response, to learn how to use them.
- Click See all terms to see a list of commonly used words in your profession that you can use in interviews.
- When you click on Most-used words, you can see the phrases you’ve used at least three times in your answer.
- Click on each Talking Point to see if you covered it in your answer. (Tip: the ones you have covered are highlighted in white.) You can also click See examples for guidance on how to include each talking point in your response.
- Click Redo to attempt the question again, or the Pencil icon to revise your response based on what you just discovered.
- Click the arrow in the lower-right corner to progress to the next question, and repeat this process until you have completed all of the practice questions. You can Practice again or Save your answers by copying and pasting them into a document or printing them when you’re finished. You can also scroll down to review your insights once more.
Google’s Interview Warmup can be viewed as a job readiness tool that helps job seekers get themselves ready for upcoming interviews. Interviewing for a job can be less stressful if you know how to use this tool. The tool will act as a coach for you, providing you with insights into your responses in order to help you improve your interviewing skills. This is true regardless of the industry you work in or the position you are trying to land.
