How to Use Google Fi Wireless Outside the USA

By Staff Writer on April 23, 2025 Wireless Connectivity

Google Fi Wireless (formerly Project Fi) has gained popularity among global travelers and digital nomads for its flexible pricing, seamless international coverage, and integration with Google’s ecosystem. But if you live outside the U.S., you might be wondering: Can I use Google Fi internationally? And how do I get started if I’m not in the U.S.?

Here’s everything you need to know—from what Google Fi is, to how to sign up and use it outside the United States.

    What is Google Fi?

Launched in 2015 as Project Fi, Google Fi is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) owned by Google. It operates primarily in the U.S., using networks from T-Mobile and US Cellular, but it also provides international data roaming in over 200 countries and territories—without the typical roaming charges.

In 2023, it was rebranded as Google Fi Wireless, expanding support for more phones, families, and eSIM functionality.

    Key Benefits of Google Fi

    • Flexible Plans: Pay-as-you-go with the Flexible plan ($10/GB) or opt for an Unlimited plan.
    • International Roaming: Use the same data rates abroad as you do in the U.S.
    • No SIM swapping needed: Use one SIM or eSIM across the globe.
    • Free international texting
    • Built-in VPN and spam protection
    • Wi-Fi calling support for areas with weak cellular service
    • Supports most Android and iPhone devices

Can You Use Google Fi Outside the USA?

    Yes—but with a catch.
Google Fi is designed for U.S. residents. You must sign up and activate the service while physically in the United States using a U.S. address and payment method. Once activated, you can take your Fi SIM or eSIM abroad and use it just like at home. It can be used in over 200+ countries and territories including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and Egypt in Africa.

⚠️ Google may suspend your service if you’re only using it abroad for an extended period without U.S. usage, as it violates their terms of service.

How to Sign Up and Activate Google Fi from Outside the U.S.

While Google Fi doesn’t officially support international sign-ups, here’s how people have successfully activated it:

    1. Use a U.S. Address: Use your own if you have one—or that of a friend or mail forwarding service.
    2. U.S. Payment Method: Use a U.S.-based debit/credit card or virtual U.S. card.
    3. Get a SIM or eSIM: Order a physical SIM card and have it mailed to a U.S. address, or choose eSIM (available on Pixel, iPhones, and some Samsung models).
    4. Activate in the U.S.: Activation must happen within the U.S., either:
      • By you (if traveling briefly to the U.S.)
      • By a friend/relative activating the SIM/eSIM for you on your device
    5. Use It Abroad: Once activated, you can take your device anywhere and enjoy Fi’s global coverage.

    Alternative Setup Tip

If you can’t travel to the U.S., consider:

    • Remote activation: Have a trusted friend activate Fi on your phone in the U.S. using your credentials.
    • eSIM: Faster activation and no shipping needed.

    Final Thoughts

Google Fi is one of the most versatile mobile services for international use. While it’s technically limited to U.S. customers, savvy users around the world have found ways to activate and use Fi as a global solution. With low-cost international data, built-in security, and compatibility across networks, it’s an ideal companion for travellers, remote workers, and expats—if you can get past the initial setup hurdle.

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Google Fi has introduced a new Unlimited Essentials plan at $35/month, offering unlimited calls, texts, and 30GB of high-speed data within the U.S. Additionally, the service has expanded its international 5G coverage to over 92 countries, now including iPhone users, making it even more appealing for global travelers. These updates, along with enhanced device setup and connectivity, further solidify Google Fi’s position as a top choice for those seeking reliable international mobile service
