How To Test Your Phone If It’s Water Resistant Using An App

Water resistance was once a special feature of smartphones, usually associated with Sony devices and rugged smartphones. Fast forward to 2021 and you’re likely to find IP ratings on many flagship phones, even mid-range ones.

How can you be sure that your phone is still waterproof? So, an application called Water Resistance Tester was discovered (and tested for validity) by Android Police to help you check if your phone is still waterproof. It all sounds dubious at first, but on closer inspection it seems legit.

The App Developer, Ray W says that the app uses your phone’s barometer to measure pressure. The actual process of using the app is also very clear, as the initial calibration takes a few seconds. You will then be asked to press firmly with two thumbs on the indicated area of the screen.

However, Android Police also found that Developer Ray W did not offer any in-app warranties and the results would not affect companies that chose not to honor those warranties. But if you look at the reviews on the Google Play Store, you can see that the app is showing great results.

Here’s How To Run A Test

CAVEAT FIRST: If you’d ever replace the screen, battery, or anything that requires your device to be opened, the seal will be broken.

    1. Go to Google Play Store (iOS version is currently not available) and download the app. The app will not work if your device is not supported. It should have at least a barometer, found only on high-end models, to check if your phone is still water resistant.
    1. Press the two pressure points displayed on the app.
    1. This app will provide the result by comparing pressure and standard deviation. If the seal on your device is still intact, this will be a positive. The app will most likely fail negatively if you ever open the device for repair.

So far, it’s one of the few apps on the Play Store that works for the newer types of waterproofing used in today’s phones. Other apps like this are obviously out of date and only work for older phone models. Now you can safely take your phone to the pool, beach or other wet places. However, you should avoid this altogether.
