Payment methods have evolved over time, offering greater convenience from ancient barter systems to cash, cards, and bank transfers. Continuing the trend of advancements, one of the latest innovations in the realm of payments is virtual cards. These digital counterparts to physical cards offer a seamless way to make transactions without exposing sensitive information. Google has recently introduced its own virtual card feature, transforming online payments and ensuring user security.
Google’s virtual card feature operates differently compared to traditional virtual cards. Rather than being a standalone card linked to a bank account or digital wallet, Google’s virtual card is directly connected to a physical card. When making an online purchase using your physical card, the feature replaces your actual card number with a unique virtual card number, shielding your personal details from merchants. This enhanced security measure is particularly valuable in an era of increasing digital transactions.
The functioning of Google’s virtual card feature varies depending on the card issuer. Some issuers provide a single virtual card number for all purchases, with the Card Verification Code (CVC) changing for each merchant. Other issuers generate a separate virtual card number for every new merchant you engage with, offering an added layer of security.
Creating a virtual card through Google Pay is a simple process, although it is currently limited to users in the United States. Additionally, your physical card must support the virtual card feature. To create a virtual card, follow these steps:
- Visit the Google Pay website (pay.google.com) using your Chrome web browser.
- Navigate to the Payment methods tab at the top of the screen.
- Locate the card for which you want to create a virtual number.
- If the card supports the feature, select “Turn on virtual card.”
- Click “Turn on” and then “Got it.”
Please note that the process for creating a virtual card on Android is similar, but you will need to access the Payment methods option through the hamburger menu.
Once you have created a virtual card, it can be used for multiple transactions as long as your original physical card remains valid. To access the details of your virtual card, follow these steps:
- Visit pay.google.com on your web browser or open the Google Pay app on your Android device.
- Go to the Payment methods tab. On Android, tap the hamburger menu icon and select “Payment methods” to view your added cards.
- Locate the card you wish to view.
- Select “Manage virtual card.”
- Choose “View and manage virtual cards” to access the issuer’s website and manage the virtual card.
Google’s virtual card can be used for various types of transactions. For online purchases, the Google Pay virtual card streamlines the payment process. When checking out on a supported website, the option to autofill your virtual card often appears. In case it doesn’t, you can manually input the card information after verifying the details using the steps mentioned earlier.
In-app purchases and subscription services offered by applications like the Google Play Store also benefit from the integration of Google Pay. Using your virtual card, you can effortlessly complete the transaction within the app.
It’s important to note that Google does not charge any fees for using its virtual card feature. However, regular transaction charges may apply depending on your bank or payment network, such as Mastercard, Visa, or American Express.
If you wish to deactivate your virtual card, follow these steps:
- Visit pay.google.com on Google Chrome or open the Google Pay app on your phone.
- Select “Payment methods.”
- Locate the card you want to disable.
- Select “Manage virtual card.”
- Click “Turn off” at the bottom of the screen, and confirm your decision in the pop-up window by selecting “Turn off.”
- Click “Got it.” Your virtual card is now inactive.
While turning off the virtual card disables it within Google Pay, it may still remain active on other platforms where you have manually used it. In such cases, you should contact the issuer to cancel the card outside of Google Pay.
