WhatsApp has launched a new feature called “Silence Unknown Callers,” providing users with increased privacy and control over their incoming calls. The Meta-owned platform aims to tackle spam, scams, and calls from unknown individuals, ensuring a safer user experience.
According to a blog post by WhatsApp, “Silence Unknown Callers” is designed to offer users more privacy and control over their incoming calls. Once activated, this feature “automatically screens out spam, scams, and calls from unknown sources.”. Notably, users will find these calls visible in their call list, although their phones will not ring. This allows users to identify important calls if needed.
To enable the “Silence Unknown Callers” feature, users can follow these steps:
- On Android and iOS devices, open WhatsApp and tap on “Settings.”
- Navigate to the “Privacy” section.
- Select “Calls.”
- Toggle the switch to either the “on” or “off” position based on your preference.
WhatsApp advises users that if they call or message a silenced caller, future calls from that number cannot be silenced. However, the option to block such callers entirely is available.
In addition to the “Silence Unknown Callers” feature, WhatsApp has also introduced a privacy checkup feature, accessible in the Privacy section. WhatsApp believes that fostering a safe space for individuals to express themselves is crucial. With this in mind, the platform encourages people to proactively connect with each other, enabling friends and loved ones to securely reach out through private messages, knowing they have a supportive environment to share their thoughts and feelings.
This checkup guides users through various steps to enhance their privacy controls. Users can customise settings such as two-factor authentication, determine who can add them to groups, set a default timer for disappearing messages, and manage visibility of their profile picture.
With these updates, WhatsApp aims to make spam calls less bothersome while empowering users to optimise their privacy settings. The new features align with the platform’s commitment to providing a secure and reliable messaging experience.
