How to move your WhatsApp chats to a new phone using the new “QR code feature”

WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature that simplifies the process of transferring chat histories between devices. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the update in a Facebook post, highlighting the enhanced privacy measures of the new feature.

As you can see after watching the above video, instead of relying on cloud backups, the QR code-based transfer allows users to securely move their data locally, as long as both devices are running the same operating system. This simplifies the process by eliminating the need for cloud backups by facilitating a local transfer process.

By scanning a QR code displayed on the old phone using the new device, data is directly transferred between the two devices. WhatsApp assures users that the data is fully encrypted during the transfer and remains strictly confined to the two devices involved.

Previously, WhatsApp users had to back up their chats to cloud storage platforms such as Google Drive for Android users and iCloud for iOS users when switching devices. Those transitioning from an Android device to an iPhone also had to download a separate “Move to iOS” app to transfer their WhatsApp data, including account information, profile photos, individual and group chats, chat history, media, and settings.

You would agree that the transfer method offers a potentially faster and easier solution compared to the traditional cloud-based backup and restore process. By bypassing cloud storage, users can avoid any limitations imposed by storage quotas, such as the free 5GB storage provided with iCloud accounts.

Kindly note that both the source and destination devices must be running the same operating system, whether it’s Android or iOS. The process slightly varies depending on the direction of the data transfer, with specific instructions provided by WhatsApp for each scenario.

Meta emphasises that this local transfer process within WhatsApp offers enhanced security and privacy compared to unofficial third-party apps or cloud services. The authentication of the transfer occurs through the QR code, ensuring a secure connection between the two devices involved. As data remains solely within the local transfer and is encrypted throughout, users can have confidence in the privacy of their chat and media history.
