An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a tiny, rewritable chip built into your phone, tablet, or smartwatch that replaces the plastic SIM card. Instead of inserting a card, you download a mobile plan as a secure “profile” (usually by scanning a QR code). You can store multiple profiles, switch lines in settings, and set different defaults for calls, SMS, and data—no tray, no swapping. Airtel launched the eSIM in January 2023.
Switching to Airtel’s eSIM (or getting a fresh number on eSIM) is easy once you know the flow. This guide covers both scenarios in simple steps.
First things first: check your phone
- Dial
*#06#
→ look for an EID (Embedded Identity). If you see it, your phone supports eSIM. - Keep the phone on Wi-Fi and charged (you’ll download the eSIM profile).
What to take to the Airtel shop (for both scenarios)
- Valid ID and NIN/vNIN (for KYC).
- Your Airtel phone number (if you’re swapping an existing line).
- An email address you can access (some stores email the QR code).
- Optional: a short list of frequently dialed numbers / last recharge (sometimes used to verify ownership during SIM swap).
While some processes may be available online, store-assisted activation is the most reliable in Nigeria because of KYC and QR code issuance.
A) Convert your existing Airtel number to eSIM (SIM swap)
Goal: keep your number; replace the plastic SIM with a digital eSIM.
Steps:
- Visit an Airtel shop and request an eSIM SIM-swap for your number.
- Complete KYC (ID + NIN/vNIN). Staff may ask basic line-ownership questions.
- The agent issues your eSIM QR code (printed or emailed).
- On your phone, install the profile:
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular/Mobile Data → Add eSIM → Use QR Code → follow prompts.
- Android (Samsung/Pixel, etc.): Settings → Connections / Network & internet → SIM Manager → Add mobile plan/Download eSIM → Scan QR.
- Set the eSIM as Primary (for calls/data) or run in Dual SIM if you’re keeping another line.
- Test: make a call, send an SMS, turn on data. Once confirmed, you can remove/disable the old physical SIM.
Good to know
- Some QR codes expire quickly—activate in-store if you can.
- If your phone is lost later, request an eSIM replacement (another SIM-swap) and Airtel will issue a fresh QR.
B) Get a brand-new Airtel number on eSIM
Goal: new Airtel line with no plastic SIM.
Steps:
- Go to an Airtel shop and request a new eSIM line (prepaid or postpaid).
- Complete KYC and choose a number from available options.
- Pick a starter bundle (you can change later).
- Receive your eSIM QR code.
- Install on your phone (same QR steps as above).
- Activate & test: call, SMS, data. Top up or buy a bundle via the Airtel app or USSD.
Tip: Ask the agent to wait while you activate—they can help if anything prompts for extra settings (e.g., APN, data line selection).
Quick comparisons
Scenario | What you need | Time | Your number |
---|---|---|---|
Swap existing SIM → eSIM | ID + NIN/vNIN, current Airtel number | ~15–30 min | Stays the same |
New eSIM number | ID + NIN/vNIN | ~15–30 min | New number |
FAQs
Can I do everything online?
In practice, store-assisted is fastest for Nigeria due to KYC and QR issuance. Some channels may support remote requests, but shops reduce delays.
What if I’m porting from another network?
Ask for MNP to Airtel eSIM. Airtel will complete the port, then issue your Airtel eSIM profile.
Can I keep multiple eSIMs?
Yes—many phones store several eSIM profiles; usually one or two active at a time (varies by model). You can also mix eSIM + physical SIM.
Moving the line to a new phone later?
You’ll typically need a new QR from Airtel (profiles aren’t always transferable). Plan a quick shop visit when upgrading phones.
Any fees?
Small activation/admin fees may apply. Ask the store before proceeding.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Profile won’t download? Ensure Wi-Fi is on, restart the phone, try again.
- No data after install? Set the new eSIM as Default for Mobile Data in settings; toggle Airplane Mode off/on.
- Calls fail? Set the eSIM as the Default line for calls, or pick the line per call.
- Still stuck? Return to the shop or contact Airtel support with your EID and error message.
