His crime was simple but he did not know it was a crime. He did not know his organisation’s website address. Initially he tried to dodge answering the question by claiming that it was a closely guarded secret only to be revealed by his Boss (Oga in Nigerian lingo). When pressed to give a response, he goofed. And now he has been suspended from his organisation for this. For real?!
If this incident had happened before the era of Internet or Social Media, it would be swept under the carpet and wouldn’t have been worth a mention. But alas, It was put on YouTube and it went viral.
For those of you who are oblivious of what happened, here is the story. This happened in Nigeria.
The Lagos Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC), Mr. Obafaiye Shem, could not tell his interviewers his organisation’s website address. The Interview was done by a team of Channels TV (a local TV station) panelists. Take a look at a snippet of the Interview as posted on YouTube.
After this video was posted on YouTube, it went viral. It was the main topic for days on Twitter #MyOgaAtTheTop. This video has sparked music remixes, dance steps on YouTube garnering close to a million views. There is even a Tee-shirt campaign too. (See Below)

It is rather unfortunate if he has been truly suspended from office but this goes to show that one must be aware of the power of the Internet. It can make or mar you. So please be aware.
But Just a thought! I wonder how many staff of public and private companies actually know their website addresses.
