Nigeria has been plagued with various security issues over the years. Despite efforts from the government to tackle insecurity, it has continued to persist in different shades ranging from kidnappings to terrorism, robbery, assaults and the likes. However, technology is one area players in the security scene are looking into to tackle the menace of insecurity and Mobile app WatchOverMe is one of such.
WatchOverMe is an application developed by Greymouth Consulting Limited , an IT company. The application was recently launched in February 2019.
The mobile app is all about personal security and safety. It offers a mobile platform where anyone can manage and respond to emergencies from their loved ones. It can be said to be a security companion for people. Get more information by visiting https://www.watchoverme.ng
The mobile app is a response to the high rate of crime in the country. Speaking in an interview with Innovation Village, IT Support Officer, Akpan Jeremiah said, “With the increased rates of kidnapping, assaults and other crimes in Nigeria, and also with a number of people now living alone, we felt an app created for the sole purpose of personal security would be great for a country where its citizens have to look over ones’ shoulders and be conscious of their surroundings at all times.”
WatchOverMe has several interesting features. One thing unique about the app is that it offers certain unique features like the “Panic Now” button which allows a user to call for help in an emergency by sending panic alerts to his/her trusted contacts.
“It also allows the user to set up alarms which check if you’re okay and if not, your trusted contacts are alerted. Not only are your trusted contacts alerted but the details about your location, nearest hospitals, and police stations will be sent to them as well,” Akpan said.
Speaking on how the app works, he said, “With WatchOverMe, you can set one or more alarms, which go off at the specific times. If the alarm is missed after set repetitions, an alert is sent to your list of trusted contacts. You also have the panic button for immediate emergencies which when pressed, your trusted contacts are alerted along with the details of your whereabouts.”
On the future plans for the app, Akpan said, “We are hoping to make WatchOverMe global and make it a household application. The objective is to create a safer world.
The Application is currently available on the Google Play Store.
