Hormuud Telecom, a prominent telecommunications company based in Somalia, has launched the 5G network in eight strategic locations across the nation.
Commencing on March 21, 2024, Hormuud Telecom is offering complimentary upgrades to its existing 4G customers. Additionally, subscribers in Mogadishu, Kismayo, Galkayo, Baidoa, Dhusamareeb, Beledwayne, Afgoye, Merca, and Dhobley will benefit from the enhanced 5G coverage, reaching up to 81% in these areas.
The newly introduced 5G service promises remarkable technical specifications, delivering speeds ranging from 10Gbps to 400Gbps per single wavelength, with an overall capacity spanning from 0.96Tbps to 38Tbps.
Hormuud Telecom’s existing 4G network already covers approximately 70% of Somalia’s population, with plans to extend coverage to 88% in urban zones and 70% in rural areas. Notably, the average data consumption per customer has risen to 5GB per month, a substantial increase from 1-2 gigabytes observed over the past two years.
In a statement, Jama Hassan Khalif, Somalia’s Minister of Telecommunication, hailed the launch as a significant milestone for both Hormuud Telecom and the nation, underscoring Somalia’s dedication to progress and advancement.
CEO Ahmed Yusuf emphasized the broader societal impact of Hormuud Telecom’s 5G deployment, highlighting benefits such as accelerated Internet speeds and enhanced services across various sectors.
