Smartphone brand Honor, a former Huawei sub-brand, has unveiled its first foldable smartphone called the Honor Magic V, joining the likes of Huawei and Xiaomi in the foldable marketplace.
Using a similar folding form factor to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold devices, the device combines a large internal folding display with a smaller external display that can be used while the device is folded.
The Magic V runs Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage.
The Honor Magic V’s price starts at 9,999 Yuan (nearly $1,569) for the 256GB storage model and and RMB 10,999 ($1,726) for the 512GB version. It will be available in three colours: orange, silver and black
The Magic V’s folding screen is 7.9″ from corner to corner and has a resolution of 2272 x 1984 with a refresh rate of 90Hz, and an aspect ratio of 10:9. This is slightly bigger than Samsung’s Z Fold 3, whose internal screen is 7.6 inches with a resolution of 2208 x 1768.
The Magic V’s external screen measure 6.45″ with a resolution of 2560 x 1080, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 21:9 aspect ratio.
Honor CEO George Zhao says it should survive being folded and unfolded 200,000 times and its water-drop hinge helps make the display appear “creaseless.”

The device has a 4,750mAh battery which supports 66W charging and Honor says you can fully charge the battery in 40 minutes or to 50 percent of its capacity in just 15 minutes.
The devices sports five cameras in total; a rear triple setup with a wide camera, ultra wide camera and what Honor calls a “spectrum enhanced camera, all 50MP sensors and a pair of 42-MP selfie cameras.
The Honor Magic V will be available for purchase in China from the 18th of January 2022.
