If you’re in need of a new iPhone, you might be tempted to buy right now. That said, if you can, we recommend waiting a few more days.
Apple’s current iPhone lineup has something for everyone. The iPhone X is the flagship and it appeals to those that want the best iPhone camera, a big screen without a massive footprint, Face ID, and outstanding performance.
The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, Apple’s two other flagships from 2017, aren’t as stacked, but they’re both very capable and much cheaper than the iPhone X.
Apple’s still selling the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus. These are Apple’s budget options and all four of these devices will get upgraded to iOS 12 this fall.
The company’s also selling the 4-inch iPhone SE, an option for those that don’t want a large screen. Apple doesn’t sell the iPhone 6 or iPhone 5s, but you can find them refurbished, or new, through third-party sellers.
If you’re looking to upgrade your iPhone this month, you’ve got options. We just can’t recommend buying any of them in August unless you’re truly desperate.
iPhone XS Launch
Apple is reportedly planning three new iPhone models for 2018 and the list includes a successor for the iPhone X, an iPhone X Plus, and a cheaper 6.1-inch LCD iPhone.
The company’s confirmed a September 12th media event and that’s when you can expect the company to outline all of these devices in detail.
Before you go out and buy last year’s models or something older you’ll want to dig into the latest details. Here are the basics for those that haven’t been paying attention to the rumors:
- Apple’s reportedly working on a 6.5-inch OLED model. This device is expected to have a ton of RAM and a huge battery.
- The company is said to be working on a 5.8-inch OLED successor to the iPhone X.
- It’s also working on a brand new 6.1-inch LCD model. The 6.1-inch iPhone is rumored to have a metal design, a cheaper price, and assortment of colors.
If any of those sound good to you, and your phone isn’t failing apart at the seams, we recommend holding out for Apple’s annual iPhone event.
If you aren’t enamored with the new models, you should still hang around and wait for Apple to announce its new phones.
Fall & iPhone Holiday Deals
When Apple announces the new iPhone models it’ll shift around the prices of its current iPhone lineup.
If the company continues to sell the iPhone X, there are rumors it’ll get discontinued, you can expect its price to drop. Even if Apple stops selling it, retailers around the world will be looking to offload their inventory and that means we should see some nice price cuts that don’t require a trade-in.
The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus should stick around as budget alternatives to the 2018 iPhones. Look for their prices to drop at Apple and for significant price cuts to take place at popular retailers and carriers.
You can also expect price cuts on the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and the iPhone SE. We’ll see price cuts on top Android phones as well.
If you aren’t in a hurry, you might think about holding out until November or December for Black Friday and holiday deals. We should see some deep discounts on popular iPhone models.
New iPhones only come around once a year. And with the launch and guaranteed price cuts just days away, those of you in need of a new iPhone would be wise to control those urges and hold onto your current phone for a little while longer.
