Dr Bashir Gwandu |
Gwandu emerged the chairman after he was unanimously elected during a recent meeting of the group at Marlborough House, the headquarters of the Commonwealth in London.
This was after he was nominated to the membership by the outgoing chairman of the CIG, Dr Bruce Gracie, the Canadian Special Advisor, International Organisations, who has been chairman of CIG for the last five years.
Gracie took over the Chairmanship of CIG from Mr Malcolm Johnson, formerly of Ofcom –the United Kingdom regulator, and currently the director of the Standardisation Bureau of the ITU.
Gwandu now doubles as Chairman of the Commonwealth ITU Group leading the representatives of the 54-member Commonwealth Countries at the ITU, and also, the Chairman of Radiocommunications Advisory Group of the ITU.
Gwandu was formally announced as the chairman of CIG that was to take over from Gracie, at a get-together, organised by the Commonwealth Telecom Organisation in Geneva, which was attended by many ITU member countries.
