Nigerian government is consideration various options for the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited. According to Minister of Communications, Abdur-Raheem Adebayo Shittu, the company is going to decide whether to embark on outright privatisation of the firm or commercialisation.
He said the decision has become necessary as a result of the company’s current low level of patronization. The minister said the lack of patronage was brought about by the communication satellite’s possession of just one signal channel. He urged the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) to determine which option is better for NIGCOMSAT – to commercialise or to privatise.
The minister made this remark in Abuja while while hosting the acting Director General of BPE, Dr. Vincent Onome Akpotaire, who was at the minister’s office on a courtesy visit. To achieve the objective, Shittu said the government was planning to constitute a technical committee to proffer solutions and will present a policy direction to harness its economic potentials.
