Google is delaying the release date of its Project Ara modular smartphone until sometime next year. The company said it the device wasn’t ready to move beyond its prototype phase.
The device was to get a soft-launch as a beta program in Puerto Rico later this year, but Google decided it would rather delay Ara while it looks for locations to test it stateside.
Just in case you don’t know what Project Ara is, the project attempt to to change the way we buy smartphones through interchangeable parts. That means once your smartphone get outdated, all you have to do is buy new parts, swap out the old ones with the new ones, instead of buying a whole new smartphone. For example, you could buy a camera from one hardware maker, a processor from another, and a display from another manufacturer to build your own personalized phone.
Google didn’t provide many new details on when and where Project Ara may land.
