Google’s New Noto Emoji Brings Back the Nostalgia of “Blobs”

Google has released a new Noto Emoji typeface that harkens back to the basic black-and-white emojis of the past. These Noto Emojis are designed to make emojis easier to understand and convey what’s being said. Furthermore, the human emojis will remind you of Google’s renowned blobs! Take a peek.

Simpler Emojis are being reintroduced by Google

Noto Emojis are an attempt to simplify the overabundance of realism and details in today’s emojis. “By reducing as much detail as possible, emoji could be more flexible, representing the idea of something rather than what is directly in front of you,” Google claims. Some are simple “1:1 conversions,” while others require some tweaking. There’s also a collection of emojis that needs to be completely redone.

The “people emojis” were then transformed back into blobs, and if you used Android before Android 8 Oreo, you’ll remember how lovely those looked. Instead of the yellow monotone, Google has provided black and white variants of blobs this time. Google is claimed to have brought back some of the features that made blobs unique while discarding the ones that didn’t function. Here’s a sample of some of them.

However, Google acknowledges that adopting simpler emojis, particularly flags, was not an easy process. “You can’t simply transform flags into black and white,” Google writes in a blog post. Finland and Sweden are so similar that you wouldn’t be able to tell them apart.

The color, size, and weight of the new Noto Emoji can all be changed. Furthermore, Google has added dark and bright settings to fit the UI of an OS and the current times. It’s also a changeable font, which means you can choose between a light or bold version to make them appear smaller or larger.
