Google has released a new teaser trailer for its upcoming Pixel 6 that includes several shots of the smartphone being used in the real world. The footage comes a little over a month after Google released its first official images of the upcoming device, which were limited to renders rather than actual photographs. In a teaser posted Thursday, Google asks the question, “What if a smartphones weren’t just smart?”
Images of the phone show a two-toned back with a band near the top around the camera, a design unveiled in August. The phone is expected to come with a new chip designed in-house called Tensor, which could boost computer power and video capabilities. The Pixel 6 Pro model will also be getting an additional telephoto lens with 4x optical zoom.
Over on its Instagram page, Google has also teased the phone in a new post which may give some hints about when its official launch might take place beyond “this fall.” As Android Police points out, the clock widgets in these images show the date as “Tue 19th.” And yes, the 19th of October falls on a Tuesday. That’s a little later than when Google announced the Pixel 5 last year (September 30th), but it’s definitely the right ballpark.
I watched the ad twice, just to check I’d grasped it correctly.
The interspersed words read: “What if smartphones weren’t just smart? What if your phone saw you for who you are?”
Naturally, Google thinks you’re a young skateboarding intellectual, but please, look at those words.
Do you really want your phone to see you for who you are? Do you really want your phone to know that you’re a neurotic windbag, with a penchant for excessive self-criticism, a fear of dentists, a cataclysmic incompetence at relationships, and a reluctance to get up before 10 a.m.?
Don’t you worry your phone might take advantage of such knowledge? You know these phones already listen to you, right? I confess I’m happy enough for my phone to do what I ask it to do and not ask too many questions. When you start talking about a $400 to $600 difference in price, the mystique and perceived advantages of a brand and OS platform starts to look a bit silly.
