Within the last couple of days, you may have noticed a Google Meet pop-up as shown below when you get into your Gmail box. The pop-up shows that Google Meet is now available via Gmail. This means that you can initiate a Google Meet video conferencing call from your Gmail account.
This is a follow-up to the announcement some days ago from Google that it would be making its premium video conferencing service, Google Meet, free for everyone. It said that “Starting in early May, anyone with an email address can sign up for Meet and enjoy many of the same features available to our business and education users, such as simple scheduling and screen sharing, real-time captions, and layouts that adapt to your preference, including an expanded tiled view.”
The Google Meet link is now enabled and located on the Gmail sidebar.
Putting Google Meet in Gmail is Google’s latest attempt to go head-to-head with Zoom, the latest video conferencing platform that has taken the whole world by storm since the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
As of last month, Google Meet was hosting 3 billion minutes of video meetings and adding roughly 3 million new users every day. And as of last week, Meet’s daily meeting participants surpassed 100 million.
