Getting around by public transport can be risky during this COVID-19 pandemic because most commuters may not comply with the social distancing guidelines. Google is lending a hand to ensure that commuters are aware of these travel restrictions by alerting users of COVID-19 related guidelines.
It has integrated such information in Google Maps, if you need to venture out, whether it’s by car or public transportation.
Google Maps shows relevant alerts from local transit agencies when you look up public transit directions for a trip that is likely to be affected by COVID-19 restrictions. These alerts can help you prepare accordingly if government mandates impact transit services or require you to wear a mask on public transportation.
Initially transit alerts started rolling out in Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, France, India, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain, Thailand, United Kingdom, USA and has started rolling out across other countries including Nigeria.
Google Maps is also introducing driving alerts to notify commuters about COVID-19 checkpoints and restrictions along their route, like when crossing national borders (starting first in Canada, Mexico and the U.S.). You should see an alert on the directions screen and after starting navigation if your route is impacted by these restrictions.
When navigating to medical facilities or COVID-19 testing centers, Google Maps will display an alert reminding you to verify eligibility and facility guidelines to avoid being turned away or causing additional strain on the local healthcare system.
Recently Google has analyzed location data from billions of Google users’ phones in 131 countries to examine mobility under lockdowns and help health authorities assess if people were abiding with social-distancing and other orders issued to rein in the virus.
It partnered with Apple to fight the COVID-19 pandemic by introducing tools so that apps from public health authorities can use the contact tracing technology.
