Android, the mobile operating system developed by Google, is undergoing its first major rebranding exercise since 2019, with a fresh logo and typeface set to make their debut. The rebranding takes place four years after Google introduced its well-known operating system. The new logo and wordmark are anticipated to appear more frequently throughout the Google ecosystem. This change also follows a decade of consistently using a lowercase “android” in the wordmark.
According to reports from 9To5Google, the new wordmark features a capitalised “A” at the beginning, while the letters “n” and “r” have been rounded to perfection in the new font. Although Google has not made an official announcement about the change, the new Android logo and wordmark have been spotted in various instances by 9to5Google, indicating their active usage.
The anticipated new 3D Android logo and revamped wordmark were initially spotted at the CES trade show in January 2023. Subsequently, they were observed in an advertisement for Android showcasing first-party apps on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Google has remained discreet about these changes, with no official announcements made as of yet.
Currently, the official Android website and Google’s press corner continue to use the older logo and wordmark, while the brand guidelines exclusively reference the previous designs. Once the rebranding gains wider visibility, users can expect to encounter the new Android branding on their device splash screens following system updates. However, until then, the older branding will still be visible during device boot-up.
The Android logo has undergone several changes throughout its history. Since its public launch in 2008, Android has transitioned through three distinct branding eras. The first era, from 2008 to 2014, showcased a deliberately futuristic font, capturing the essence of Android’s nerdy appeal. In 2014, the logo underwent a significant softening with the introduction of Material Design. Then, in 2019, the logo underwent further simplification, with the removal of the full Bugdroid mascot in favor of just the headpiece.
In addition to the Android logo, Google has also made updates to the Find My Device app logo. While the Material You design overhaul took place in February, the green icon remained unchanged. However, a new Find My Device logo has now been discovered.
Google reassures users that location data collected from the network is end-to-end encrypted, preventing Google from accessing or using it for other purposes. More details on the built-in privacy safeguards will be provided before the launch.
