Tech giant Google announced that it is giving VPN access to all Google One members on all plans. Hitherto, it was only available to those with Pixel devices and those on the Premium 2TB plan.
It is also rolling out a “dark web report” for all subscribers so that you can figure out where your sensitive information is circulating.
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) acts as a protective shield to secure your internet activity from being monitored by hackers and network operators, including your internet service provider, carrier or public Wifi provider, by adding an additional encryption layer. Additionally, it masks your IP address from the websites and applications you visit, which could otherwise trace your online movements and determine your location. Simply put, it assures you that your connection is private and secure.
Google has started rolling out this feature globally for all Google One plans, including the Basic plan that starts at $1.99/mo. The VPN access feature will be available in 22 countries across Android, iOS, Windows and Mac devices. Unfortunately this does not include any African country. You can also share the VPN with up to five others if they’re on your Google One plan.
According to Google, “Google One’s dark web report helps you scan the dark web for your personal info — like your name, address, email, phone number and Social Security number — and will notify you if it’s found. When you enable dark web report, you provide and select the information you’d like to keep an eye on within your monitoring profile. And if any matching info is found on the dark web, we’ll notify you and provide guidance on how you might protect that information.”
“In addition to showing results matched to the personal info you added to your monitoring profile, dark web report will also show you other related info that may be found in those data breaches. The info in your monitoring profile is handled according to Google’s privacy policy and you can delete any info from your profile or stop monitoring at any time.”
Google’s Dark web report will start rolling out over the next few weeks to all Google One plans’ subscribers in the U.S for now.
Some days ago, Google announced that its AI powered Magic Eraser will now be available to more Pixel phones and Google One subscribers on Android and iOS.
