Sources told 9to5Google that Google may be working on a second foldable Pixel phone. The device is reported to be under development under the codename “Jumbojack,” which is mentioned in a future version of Android 12 that 9to5Google calls “Android 12.1.” This is Google’s newest foldable codename, following rumors of a different device called “Passport.”
There isn’t much information available on Jumbojack’s potential form, but 9to5Google has a few important details. It appears to feature two screens, one of which is disabled when the gadget is folded. That suggests a design akin to Samsung’s foldable phones, that combine a small external display.
Many believe the Jumbojack codename refers to JIBC’s Jumbo Jack cheeseburger, implying the phone will fold “hamburger manner” rather than “hotdog style” like it does in its current form. That speculation, however, should be treated with the same skepticism as the goods.
As Per 9to5Google, “Jumbojack will also seemingly feature two displays, and when this Pixel is folded, the second display becomes unavailable. This suggests a design along the lines of the Galaxy Fold, with a large inner display and a smaller outer one.”
Although reliable leaker Evan Blass revealed this morning that Passport will arrive before the end of 2021, there is no word on when or even if Jumbojack will be released commercially.
There’s a chance it’s only a prototype for Android’s foldable capabilities, such as better multitasking. In any case, the fact that it exists shows that Google is more serious about foldables than it previously looked as the company prepares to create its first true flagship competition with the Pixel 6.
