Google Drops Dessert Names for its Next Version of Android

Mobile operating system Android will not be naming its next version after a dessert or sweet treat putting a halt to a trend that started ten years ago.

As it is its tradition, the name of the new version would have started with Q. However, Google decided against the pattern as it believes the namimg scheme made it difficult for consumers to know which version of the OS was the latest. The new edition, which will be released later this year, will be called Android 10.

Here is a list of the names of the previous versions:

    Android (Alpha)

    Android (Beta)

     Android Cupcake

    Android Donut

    Android Eclair

    Android Froyo

    Android Gingerbread

    Android Honeycomb

    Android Ice Cream Sandwich

    Android Jellybean

    Android KitKat

    Android Lollipop

    Android Marshmallow

    Android Nougat

    Android Oreo

    Android Pie

    Android ….. 10

“This naming tradition has become a fun part of the release each year,” Google said in a blog.

“But we’ve heard feedback over the years that the names weren’t always understood by everyone in the global community.”

As examples, Google said L and R were “not distinguishable when spoken in some languages”.

“As a global operating system, it’s important that these names are clear and relatable for everyone in the world,” it said.
