Google has changed its logo from a conventional serif font, to a clean, minimalistic san serif font which retains the colours of the original logo.
The elements of the logo are the Google Logotype (shown above), its newly introduced Dots which show when there a process is happening, etc. and the Google G which is a compact version of the full logo, suitable for smaller contexts.
In a blog post, Google reveals that its new logotype is a custom, geometric sans-serif typeface which maintains the multi-colored playfulness and rotated ‘e’ of the previous logo.
The new logotype is much more easier on the eyes and is more consistent with recent design trends such as flat design, Material Design, etc, and will look much better aesthetically on much recent devices. The new logo introduces the improved aesthetics without being so much of a departure from the previous logo that Google users will feel that something is amiss.
Also, it is not only beautiful but functional. Google revealed in a blog post that the final logotype was tested exhaustively at various sizes and weights for maximum legibility in all the new digital contexts. This will be important for smaller device types such as smartwatches and other smaller or future device types.
Also, the dot element of the new logo makes animations very easy with the logo, a feature which Google emphasized in its Material Design concept of Android 5.
